Body Lift and Surgery After Significant Weight Loss
After you lose significant amounts of weight, sometimes called "Massive Weight Loss",
sagging of the skin is inevitable.
Fortunately, there is something you can do about it. Different procedures can help
different parts of the body; call the office for a consultation, and Dr. Nachbar will
be happy to tell you how we can help.
For some patients, this occurs after gastric bypass or after gastric stapling procedures.
These procedures reduce the size of the stomach, producing a gastric pouch that fills
more quickly and produces satiety, or a sense of fullness, after a smaller amount of food.
For many patients, this can help with weight loss, but is no magic cure. It still takes
significant discipline to lose large amounts of weight.
For other patients, massive weight loss can occur with dietary restriction and exercise without
gastric surgery.
However you lose the weight, massive weight loss will produce loose, hanging skin, because the strectching
of the skin will have produced a loss of elasticity, preventing the skin from "snapping" back. The only effective
way to deal with this problem is surgery, to remove the excess tissue.
These surgeries tend to produce significant scars, which are, however, very well tolerated, due to the
dramatic improvement in appearance, and even in ability to get around without the hanging skin interfering
with your movements. To treat all the areas desired often requires multiple procedures.
